Consists
of 17,500 persons living in 8,800 Jewish households. Of these 17,500
persons, 15,500 are Jewish.
21% of Jewish households are in residence for 3-7 months of the
year. Thus, of the 17,500 persons in Jewish households, about 3,400
are part-year residents. The population in Jewish households
increased
from 16,400 persons in 1992.
63% (11,100 persons) of the Jewish population live in Sarasota; 16%
(2,700 persons), in Bradenton; 15% (2,500 persons) in Longboat Key;
and 7% (1,200 persons), in Venice. 53% (9,200 persons) of the
population are age 65 and over, including 31% (5,300 persons) who
are
age 75 and over. The 53% makes Sarasota-Manatee the third oldest of
50 American Jewish communities. 10% (1,800 persons) are age 17 and
under. Of the 8,800 Jewish households, 12% contain children age
0-17, 27%, a single person living alone, and 54%, a married couple
with no children living
at home. The median household income is $79,000 (in 2007 dollars).
2% of households are Orthodox, 23% are Conservative, 38% are Reform,
and 37% are Just Jewish. 32% of Jews never attend synagogue services
and 25% attend once per month or more. 20% of married couples are
intermarried. 45% of households are synagogue members, 73% of whom
are members of a synagogue located in Sarasota-Manatee. Of those who
are synagogue
members, 4% are members of an Orthodox synagogue; 34%, a
Conservative synagogue; 45%, a Reform synagogue, 12%, a
non-denominational synagogue and 4%, other synagogues.
10% of households are members of the Jewish Community Center (JCC).
19% of households participated in a JCC activity in the past year.
47% of households are members of some Jewish organization, such as
B’nai B’rith or Hadassah. 56% of households have visited Israel, 27%
on a trip with a Jewish organization or synagogue. 11% of Jewish
adults experienced anti-Semitism
in Sarasota-Manatee in the past year. 37% of Jewish adults perceive
a great deal or a moderate amount of anti-Semitism in
Sarasota-Manatee. 71% of households donated to a Jewish charity in
the past year; 82%, to a non-Jewish charity; and 59%, to a Jewish
Federation, including 43% who donated to the Sarasota-Manatee Jewish
Federation. The average donation to the local Jewish Federation in
the past year was $371.
