AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TECHNION-ISRAEL
INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

The Technion is Israel’s leading scientific and technological center for applied research and education. Often referred to as “Israel’s MIT” the Technion was founded in 1924, making it the first institution of higher learning in Israel. It commands a worldwide reputation for it’s pioneering work in computer science, biotechnology, water-resource management, materials engineering, aerospace and electrical engineering as well as medicine. From microsatellites and microchips to brilliant engineers and entrepreneurs, the Technion is propelling Israel toward better security and
economic independence. The Technion’s 18 faculties (departments) and 30 research centers and institutes in Haifa, are home to 13,500 students and more than 700 faculty members.
The Majority of the founders and managers of Israel’s high tech companies are Technion graduates. In fact, Technion graduates lead 62 out of Israel’s 94 high-tech companies, and 90 of Israel’s 100 top companies. These graduates generate onethird of Israel’s $100 million GDP.
The ATS has raised $972 million since its inception in 1940, more than half that during the past eight years. The ATS, with more than 20,000 supporters and 17 offices around the nation,
is the leading supporter of higher education in Israel. The Southern Region, which last year raised in excess of $12 million, consists of chapters in Greater Miami, Boca Raton, Palm Beach, Sarasota FL and Houston, TX. ■

ABOUT SHAARE ZEDEK MEDICAL CENTER

Shaare Zedek, affectionately known as “The Hospital With A Heart,” is renowned for its unique blend of superior medical treatment combined with special care. When Shaare Zedek, one of the oldest hospitals in Jerusalem, was officially opened in 1902, it was considered ultramodern and ahead of its time. Throughout the years the medical center has pioneered in many areas of medicine, targeting the needs of the people of Israel. Since then, the hospital has created services and facilities that have made global impacts on the medical profession. Over the decades, high demands for added medical care resulted in the expansion of the hospital’s facilities on Jaffa Road to 18 buildings and a 250-bed capacity. In 1979, the decision was made to build a 500-bed medical center, which is now located on a 14-acre site opposite Mt. Herzl. Shaare Zedek is centrally located in the heart of Jerusalem and easily accessible throughout the city. The 1,300,000 square-foot complex consists of ten linked buildings comprised of ten floors. The lower three levels were built underground – not in response to construction requirements, but due to practical foresight. The hospital has a long-standing tradition for compassionate care and an outstanding reputation as one of the premier hospitals in the world in several specialties, namely, the Wilf Woman and Infant Center; the Jesselson Heart Center, as well as palliative care,
and medical genetics. The hospital has maintained a longstanding tradition excellence when helping people in search of medical care. Shaare Zedek Medical Center continues to be a haven for the sick and injured, serving the people of Israel and ensuring the future of a nation. ■

Rositta Ehrlich Kenigsberg, the founding chair of the Children of Holocaust Survivors of S.E. Florida, is a child of Survivor who was born in the displaced persons camp of Bindermichel in Austria. She is a graduate of Sir George Williams and McGill Universities in Canada. Presently, she serves as the Executive Vice President of the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center, the organization she has been a part of for over 26 years.  For over a decade, Ms. Kenigsberg has been a leading advocate – nationally and internationally – for securing Long-Term Home Health Care for Holocaust survivors, and most particularly, for our Florida Survivor community.  Her speaking engagements have included many international conferences, commemorations and gatherings.  Many of her presentations have been published, reprinted and some have appeared in the Congressional Record. Over the years, some of her positions included: President of the International Network of Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors, Executive Member of the American Friends of the Jewish Museum in Vienna, Austria, Member of the Advisory Committee for the U.S. Distribution of Funds from the Swiss Fund for Needy Victims of the Holocaust, and locally as a member of the Advisory Committee of the newly developed Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Human Right Studies for Florida Gulf Coast University.  In 1996, Ms. Kenigsberg received a 5-year term Presidential Appointment from then President Bill Clinton to serve as a Member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. Since 1999, Ms. Kenigsberg has served in an advisory capacity to the Education Committee of the Florida Governor’s Task Force on Domestic Violence, and in January 2001 was named the fi rst Chair of the Governor’s Task Force on Domestic Violence Education Advisory Committee. Currently, her efforts and energies are focused on the newly acquired facility in Hollywood, Florida which will house the ongoing documentation and education efforts of the Center and feature the fi rst South Florida Holocaust Museum and Reference & Research Library.  The Holocaust Documentation and Education Center has forged a Legacy of Remembrance that will forever and always bear witness to truth and history, commemorate and celebrate the values of decency, humanity and dignity and, above all, honor our sacred pledge to those who were there – to never allow their memories, words, and silences to be denied, distorted, or forgotten.

AMERICAN FRIENDS OF MAGEN DAVID ADOM – ARMDI

American Friends of Magen David Adom – ARMDI supports the life saving
efforts of Magen David Adom (MDA) – Israel’s “911,” in times of peace
and war. MDA is Israel’s only government-mandated ambulance and emergency
responders, serving as the
nation’s second line of defense

with medical, disaster, ambulance
and blood services. Thanks to
AFMDA/ARMDI supporters,
more than 700 ambulances and
Mobile Intensive Care Units
travel over 6.75 million miles,
taking care of more than 600,000
patients annually. MDA and its
team of 10,000 trained volunteers
and 1,500 professional medical
responders provide Israel’s
pre-hospital emergency medical
needs on a 24/7 basis. The MDA National Blood Services Center provides 100%
of the blood requirements of the Israel Defense Forces and 97% of the blood needs
of Israel hospitals and the general population, including collecting, processing,
testing, and distribution. MDA has over 100 Emergency Medical Stations and
11 dispatch stations in communities throughout Israel, from large cities to small
towns and even kibbutzim. AFMDA is now working on renovating, expanding or
rebuilding many of the outdated Emergency stations. For more information or to
make a donation, contact the Southeast Region office at 800-626-0046 or email
